MUSTER SPEAKER

The 2004 Dallas Aggie Muster speaker, Roger T. Staubach, is one of the most well known and recognized sports figures in American history, as well as one of the most successful business executives in the United States. Born February 5, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he attended the Naval Academy, where he lettered in three varsity sports (football, basketball, and baseball) and graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of science in engineering. As Navy’s quarterback, he led the Midshipmen to a 9-1 record and a #2 national ranking in 1963. He was selected as only the fourth college junior ever to win the Heisman Trophy and received the Naval Academy Athletic Association Sword in 1965. Following his college career, he was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys in the 10th round of the 1964 draft. He fulfilled his military obligation by serving 4 years of active duty in the Navy, including one year of service in Vietnam.

In 1968, Roger used his military leave time to attend Cowboys training camp. He joined the silver and blue full-time in 1969 and soon made a name for himself, donning the number 12. Over the next 11 seasons, he rewrote the Cowboys’ record book while leading the team throughout one of the most successful eras in NFL history. In 1971, with a quarterback rating of a then unheard-of 104.8, he was voted league MVP by the NFL Players Association and was named the winner of the Bert Bell Award. He capped off the year by being named MVP in Super Bowl VI where Dallas beat Miami 24-3. During his career, the Dallas Cowboys won 5 NFC titles and 2 Super Bowls. He was a 6-time Pro Bowl selection, 5-time passing champion in the NFL, and his quarterback rating of 83.42 was the highest in NFL history at the time of his retirement in 1979. Known as “Captain Comeback,” because of his ability to lead the team to victory down the final stretch, he lead the Cowboys to 23 fourth-quarter comeback victories, including 14 in the final 2 minutes or overtime.

Recognition for Roger didn’t end at retirement. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981, the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor in 1983, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 as a first ballot nominee.

Roger is now chairman of the board and chief executive officer of The Staubach Company, a global, full-service real estate advisory firm that delivers cost-effective solutions for users of office, industrial, and retail space. Founded in 1977, the company was one of the early pioneers of exclusive office tenant representation, established to minimize conflicts of interest between property developers and owners. It has since expanded its service lines to meet clients’ ever-changing requirements. Areas of expertise include site selection, acquisition and disposition, financing, design and construction consulting, and other outsourced services. With over 50 offices in the Americas, The Staubach Company has access to 7,600 professionals worldwide in over 40 countries through DTZ Staubach Tie Leung.

The company, known for its unparalleled standard of business and personal ethics, lists among its clients: Barnes & Noble, Blockbuster, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CVS, Duke Energy, E*TRADE, ExxonMobil, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, Kinkos, Morgan Stanley, Nextel, Nissan, PepsiCo, Pier 1, Radio Shack, Ultimate Electronics, and Verizon.

Roger currently serves on the boards of directors of AMR Corporation, Brinker International (along with Texas A&M University President Robert Gates and Vice Chairman of the TAMU Board of Regents, Erle Nye ‘59), and McLeodUSA. He continues to be involved with the American Cancer Society Annual Children’s Luncheon, the United States Naval Academy Foundation, and numerous other civic, charitable, and professional organizations.

Business-related honors bestowed on Roger include the 1994 Kupfer Distinguished Executive Award from the Mays School of Business at Texas A&M University, the “Commercial Property News” Corporate Services Executive of the Year for 1999, 2000 and 2001, the NCAA 2000 “Teddy Roosevelt Award”, the American Jewish Congress 2001 Torch of Conscience Award, and also in 2001, he was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate by his alma mater, the United States Naval Academy.

Roger and his wife Marianne have five children: Jennifer, Michelle, Stephanie, Jeff, and Amy, Texas A&M Class of ’99.

AGGIE MUSTER

"Softly call the Muster, let comrade answer ’Here’..."

Aggies gathered together on June 26,1883 to live over again their college days, the victories and defeats won and lost upon the drill field and in the classroom. By April 21, 1903, this annual gathering evolved into a celebration of Texas’ Independence on San Jacinto Day. These early meetings included field games and banquets for Aggies to reflect and celebrate their memories of Aggieland. ’Let every alumni answer a roll call’ wrote the former students. It was not until 1922, however, that April 21 became the official day of events for all Aggies, thus, the annual tradition of Muster was born. The March 1923 Texas Aggie urged, ’If there is an A&M man in one-hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas.

Still remembering and honoring the time spent in Aggieland, the tradition of mustering has grown in strength, meaning, and spirit. By 1929, meeting had grown worldwide, and in 1942 Aggie Muster gained international recognition. Twenty-five men, led by General George Moore ’08, mustered during the Japanese Siege of the Philippine island of Corregidor. Knowing that Muster might soon be called for them, these Aggies embodied the essence of commitment, dedication, and friendship- the Aggie Spirit. They risked their lives to honor their beliefs and values. That small group of Aggies on an outpost during World War II inspired what has developed into one of our greatest traditions.

Muster is celebrated in more than four-hundred places world wide, with the largest ceremony on the Texas A&M campus in College Station. The ceremony brings together more Aggies, worldwide, on one occasion than any other event.

The students of Texas A&M University coordinate the Campus Muster. Because Muster was established to bring Aggies together, each Campus Muster is dedicated to the fifty-year reunion class. The Campus Muster involves an entire day of activities for students both present and past. Alumni enjoy a special program including tours of the ever-changing campus. At noon, all Aggies congregate at the Academic Plaza for the Camaraderie Barbecue that rekindles the tradition of the original Muster celebration. That night, the Muster ceremony consists of an address by a keynote speaker, the reading of poems, followed by the Roll Call for the Absent. The Roll Call honors Aggies that have fallen since the last Muster roll was read. As the names are read, a friend or family member answers ’Here’, and a candle is lit to symbolize that while those Aggies are not present in body, they will forever remain with us in Aggie Spirit.

Century-old roots provide the basis of Muster as Aggies know it today. It has changed, yet the Spirit in which it was established remains the same. Since the beginning, every Aggie has lived and become a part of the Aggie Spirit. What is felt today is not just the love of a fellow Aggie, it is the spirit of hundreds of thousands of Aggies who have gone before. Muster is how that Spirit is remembered and will continue to unite Texas A&M and the Aggie family. A&M may change, but the Spirit never will.

Big XII Men’s Basketball Tournament
Be a part of the action as Dallas again hosts both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments on March 9-14.

No. 11-seed Texas A&M (7-20, 0-16) will play No. 6 seed Missouri (15-12, 9-7) in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. at American Airlines Center. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

The winner of that game will play No. 3-seed Kansas (20-7, 12-4) on Friday at 8:20 p.m. The semifinals are on Saturday (1 p.m. and 3:20 p.m.) with the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. The tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Big XII Women’s Basketball Tournament
The Aggie women play in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big XII Basketball Tournament. Be a part of the action as Dallas again hosts both the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments on March 9-14.

The Texas A&M Aggies (9-18, 2-14) will face the No. 23-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (19-8, 9-7) in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Reunion Arena in Dallas.

The Aggies are the No. 11 seed in the field while the Sooners are the No. 6 seed. It will mark the third meeting between the two this season. The teams battled to overtime in the first meeting at Reed Arena before OU won, 65-56. Then, in Norman, Okla., A&M rallied from a 16-point first half deficit to cut the Sooners’ lead to four points in the final two minutes. Free throws by OU sealed the win, 56-46.

A&M will be looking for its second win at the tournament. Its lone win came against Texas in 1998. Perhaps history can help the Aggies in Dallas.

A&M won the final Southwest Conference Tournament in 1996 at Reunion Arena after upsetting Texas and Texas Tech in consecutive days. Ironically, the same playing floor used at that tournament has been repainted and will serve as the surface for a second straight season for the Big 12 Conference.

A&M enters the game after falling to Missouri, 61-60, this past Wednesday in College Station. Overall A&M’s Big 12 losses were by an average of 8.1 points and just 3.4 points in games at Reed Arena. Of the Aggies’18 losses this season, 14 were by 10 points or less, while 9 were by 6 points or less. Against three opponents ranked in the top 10 at Reed Arena, the Aggies margin of defeat was 2.0.

The Aggies’ strength of schedule is ranked as the 7th toughest by WBCA/Summerville RPI.

The Aggies’ defense continues to be among the best in the Big 12 in several areas. In Big 12 games, A&M leads the league in turnover margin and in steals. The Aggies are sixth in scoring defense. The Aggies have held 13 of its last 15 league opponents at or below their average offensive scoring output.

Oklahoma enters the game after losing to Texas, 57-54, last Tuesday at home. The Sooners had beaten Texas Tech and Oklahoma State leading to the game with the Longhorns. The Sooners are led by senior Maria Villarroel with 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds.

A&M senior point guard Toccara Williams is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA for average steals for a sixth straight week. She led the nation for 10 weeks last year. Williams is the third player in NCAA history to post career totals of more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 700 assists, and 400 steals. With 448 steals to her credit, she ranks No. 7 all-time in the NCAA and No. 1 all-time in the Big 12. Just this season, Williams has surpassed the 1,000-point mark, 500-rebound mark, 700-assists mark and 400 steal mark. She also broke the league record for all-time steals. She ranks No. 2 in Big 12 history in assists. Williams has recorded a steal in all 110 games she has played at A&M. A starter in each of those 110 contests, Williams has the sixth longest active starting streak in the nation according to numbers compiled by the West Virginia SID office. She surpassed the 1,000-point milestone earlier this month and now ranks No. 5 all-time at A&M with 1,289 points.

Williams is the Aggies leader in scoring at 15.7, assists at 7.2, and steals at 4.1. She ranks No. 6 in the Big 12 in scoring overall and No. 3 in league games. She is the only Big 12 player to record more than 1,000 points, 700 assists, and 400 steals.

Senior Lynn Classen ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 in blocked shots with 51. Her 51 blocked shots broke the school record for blocks in a season set by Jaynetta Saunders who had 50 in 2000. Classen has blocked 134 shots in her career and ranks No. 2 all-time at A&M and No. 5 all-time in the Big 12. She needs three shots to tie the school record set by Kelly Cerny (1993-96).

About Dr. Eddie J. Davis ’67
Dr. Eddie J. Davis, president of the Texas A&M Foundation, was selected by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to lead the university on an interim basis while a national search is conducted to select Gates’ successor.

Dr. Davis has long made an impact on the university. From his undergraduate days when he served as Corps Commander to his most recent position serving as President of the Texas A&M Foundation, he has worked to improve the nation’s seventh largest institution through a variety of increasingly responsible positions.

As president of the Foundation since 1993, he led the fundraising effort that supports the academic excellence at Texas A&M. The current seven-year One Spirit One Vision campaign, which ends December 31, 2006, has raised more than $1.4 billion (more than 40% above the campaign goal) to improve Texas A&M by creating student, faculty, and facilities support. More than 1,700 student scholarships, 117 graduate fellowships, 69 faculty chairs and 62 professorships have been created during this campaign. He also directed the conclusion of the previous campaign, which raised $637 million.

Prior to his time with the Foundation, Dr. Davis held every key financial position at the university and The Texas A&M University System, ultimately serving as executive deputy chancellor of the Texas A&M system. In that position he was the chief operating officer for The Texas A&M University System and managed the financial operations of TAMUS, including financial planning, conduct of financial analyses and provisions of appropriate reports and controls. He also directed operating budgets of more than $1.1 billion, capital construction of $180 million, management of 15,000 employees, plus the legislative and state affairs program of the system.

Since 1993 he has served as a tenured professor on the Educational Administration Graduate Faculty. In this role, he is responsible for teaching Educational Administration 611 - Higher Education Business and Finance, a doctoral level course focused on planning, budgeting, controlling, organizing, and directing operations in institutions of higher education. The course emphasizes the relationship between financial support and decision-making in the academic setting.

Dr. Davis earned his B.S., M.E. and Ph.D. from Texas A&M. After four years in the Army, including a tour with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam, Dr. Davis returned to work at Texas A&M in 1972.

Dr. Davis has said he plans to provide leadership to "maintain the momentum left behind" by Gates, citing an obligation "to stay the course and make the key tactical and strategic decisions necessary to ensure we do not become diverted from the targets set out during the last four years." He emphasized that, even though serving in an interim capacity, he stands ready to make the decisions necessary to maintain the university’s "trajectory of progress."
